A defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible threats associated with Chinese cars, and staff have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret matters in any cars.
Safety Advice for MoD Personnel
During a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to talk about classified information while travelling in Chinese cars.
He said that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that safety is a concern in all modern cars.
Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a secret level in any vehicle, due to the increasing risks of surveillance that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about safety.
When it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Wider Security Context
The announcement comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to disable public transport and bring disruption to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
The broader security environment underscores the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in every areas of official operations, from transport use to communication practices.
