Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not only the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
