The Kindness of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Person I Had Just Met Supported Me Land the Role That Changed My Life

In the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to Europe with a friend. Since my friend was considering pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had planned a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large 10-storey building on the Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the canteen, where we picked up meals, found a table, and started talking to other diners.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He asked me what I did for a living, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – close to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I should apply for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that evening. The man from Iraq approached me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but right away told my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his full name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in multiple respects. I didn't possess the courage or self-belief to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university resulted in a position in Switzerland where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
